lyrics

In the forest there’s a tower and inside it there’s a girl
No one sees her, so no matter if she’s plain or if she’s fair
There’s no stairway to the bottom, those four walls enclose her world
And the outside has forgotten that she’s there

And she’s waiting in the tower, and her heart turns slowly numb
As the days go by like decades, and the rescue never comes
And the rescue never comes

She may pass the time in weaving, she may pass the time in sleep
While the ivy climbs the tower as her hair grows to the floor
She knows every chink and cranny of that drear and dismal keep
And she wonders if she’s trapped forevermore

There she paces like a phantom and she walks the chamber round
As the silence grows oppressive like the silence of the tomb
There are days she wants to scream to hear the echoes of the sound
But there’s no one there to hear outside that room

There are visions in her mirror of a world so far away
There are shadows round the tower like the shadows in her eyes
As she finds a fitful slumber at the end of every day
She can only dream about the open skies
